The subclip tab in the details page gives you full control and insight into the subclips of your clips. This tab is sometimes referred to as the Logger application.

1. How to open subclip details

Find the Show Subclips action on a clip or subclip thumbnail and click it.

You can also select multiple clips and click the Show Subclips icon in the toolbar:

If you open the subclip details for multiple clips, you’ll have a navigation element at the top of the page which you can use to go to the next or previous clip:

The biggest part of the screen is taken up by the player. At the bottom of the screen you'll find the player and logger controls.

The sidebar on the right contains a search bar at the top and a list of search results below it. For example, in the screenshot below, we searched “Robert” and got one result, which is a subclip within the current clip which matches the query. 

The search bar also contains a filter button, which works in the same way as in the library search and which can be used to drill down in the search results.

If you have permissions to edit a subclip, you can click it to start editing. The description field and the IN and OUT timecodes will become editable.

You can change the text as you like. Multiple lines are allowed. When you are happy with your edit, click somewhere outside the subclip to save your changes, or use the shortcut shift+enter. Press escape to cancel your changes.

When you enter a # while editing, you can pick from a list of existing tags to add to your description or you can create a new one. Press enter once you have picked or typed your tag. Multiple tags can be used in the description. Tags can be used as a search filter in the sidebar or in the library.

Click the subclip to start editing it. The timecodes at the top can be edited. The blue circle buttons next to the timecode will copy the playhead position into the timecode field. The small arrows will change the timecode by one single frame.

The player controls at the bottom of the screen also feature a SET IN and SET OUT button, and a button to play the selected range:

To save your changes, press the “Save changes” button (with the floppy disk icon), or use the shortcut shift+enter, or click somewhere outside the subclip. To cancel your changes, press the escape key.

You can add a star rating to a subclip by pressing the star icon and clicking the amount of stars you want to give this subclip. The star rating can be used as a search filter in the sidebar and the library.

Don’t like what you created? Remove a subclip by pressing the red trash icon. This won’t touch the original media file. You have to go into edit mode (click the subclip) to see the trash icon.

Click the SET IN button. At the bottom of the sidebar, an input for a new subclip will appear.

The player starts playing, and we start editing a new subclip which starts at the playhead position where SET IN was pressed. The OUT timecode of the new subclip will follow the playhead position as long as SET OUT isn’t pressed. This is indicated by a blinking “recording” icon on the SET IN button and a stop icon on the SET OUT button:

Click SET OUT to fix the OUT point of the new subclip. You can enter a description in the subclip input which appeared at the bottom right of the screen.

Tip: You don’t have to wait for the player to reach the desired OUT point to start typing your description.

Say you want to describe an entire clip using subclips. The fastest way to do this is using the keyboard shortcuts.

Press F9 (SET IN), which starts “recording”. Type your description. When reaching the desired OUT position, press F10 (SET OUT). When you finish typing your description, press Shift+Enter to save the subclip. Press F9 (SET IN) again to create the next subclip.

Tip: You can press F9 multiple times while playing, which changes the IN point but keeps recording. This is useful if you started recording before the desired IN of the new subclip.

Tip: Fixing the OUT point using SET OUT is optional. If you finished typing your description when reaching the desired OUT point, you can simply Shift+Enter to save the subclip. Saves a key press!

Use the select button at the top left of a subclip to select it. Hold the Ctrl key to select multiple subclips. Hold the Shift key to select a range of subclips.

When one or more subclips have been selected, a toolbar will appear below the search bar, it contains actions for assigning the selected subclips or deleting them.
